Charlie Kelly Blog 2: Real-Time Search

Yahoo Inc. is testing a new real-time search results feature through its new partnership with OneRiot Inc. this week in hopes that it will give users better search results. OneRiot Inc. has developed this software that enables users to share real-time information on what they are searching and by doing so it will give more specific searches instead of sending users to the typical Wikipedia, or Google search engine. While this new software for Yahoo is just in the beginning stages, Twitter has been in the developing stages as well for a similar system for Microsoft and Google to try out on their own.
David Berkowitz talked in the article entitled, “Yahoo to Add Real-Time Search Results”, about the potential future for real-time search results as not just a tool for search engines but a potential improvement to the business world. He is predicting advertisers will love to use this real-time software to find potential customers through finding what people are purchasing. A software product like this will be invaluable to many advertisers and marketing companies because by using real-time search results it allow these companies to get more of their advertisements out there and reach more potential customers. By incorporating OneRiot’s software into business it could give consumers a better way to search for the products they want and need and also related products that other people have bought or looking at purchasing. Just like the advertisers in the market on the web who advertise their company’s products, retailers and even service providers can reach their clientele through this real-time search through advertisements, or by seeing what potential buyers are looking to purchase.
There are problems though with the new software, one being that it is so new it’s really only in the test stages even for these big search engines such as Yahoo, and Google. The vision is to one day integrate this into the business world but that day has yet to be seen because of trying to configure the software to pick which real-time information is relevant to the searches that are inquired. Twitter’s CEO stated in the article about how they are putting more engineers toward working out the kinks in the new software to find out what people think is relevant to specific searches.
This new software will start out with the search engines and really make web searching much easier and user friendly. Once the problems are worked out the potential for the business community and this software are unparalleled.

  2. I think this feature will definitely aid businesses to stay on top of modern society. It reminds me of the google "new results" feature, where if you type a recent or developing story into google, a new article or something of that sort appears as a search result.
This will definitely give businesses a etter idea of what consumers are looking at, allowing them to adjust their marketing schemes.
Consumers get to see what other consumers are buying. So if a consumer likes to be in on any modern trends, this feature will definietly be beneficial to them.

  3. Although this real-time facet to search engines has its kinks and complications, I think it's a great application to aid businesses in the future. It would allow businesses to track purchases or see what the general public is interested in through their search history. While many advertisers and researchers look at this information currently, real-time would enhance search results to make them more specific. This way, marketers could reach more potential customers and get their products out into the open. This is an important use of technology to enhance how businesses reach their consumers and manage the data that they have at hand.

  4. Charlie this is a very interesting article. What OneRiot Inc. is introducing is something that I believe will be very beneficial towards many. Allowing users the access of real-time information cuts out all of the spam and "related articles" students come across. From a student's perspective this will be very helpful when it comes to finding up to date articles and information opposed to searching and finding this great article and then figuring out it was dated from 5 years ago. It will save time and will provide all with better and more sufficient information. From an IT standpoint its great that Yahoo is taking a risk and incorporating OneRiot Inc. into their repertoire. Stated in the original post by Charlie, I'm curious to see how other main search engines such as Google start to incorporate real-time searches into their systems as well.

  5. These real time search engines seem very interesting. I believe this to be a very innovative way of using our modern technology. If companies are able to use it to get real time data, it will help their industries tremendously. In the modern day business world, and information age we live in, people demand relevant and current information. This realtime system takes care of both of these demands. This kind of sounds like the new software that Microsoft has implemented with its "Bing" search engine. Its probably a safe assumption that in the near future there will be realtime results for all web searches.
