The article I read, “Doctor on-call? Cell-Phone Camera Can Diagnose Disease”, talks about new technologies enabling small third world countries to have access to medical doctors. Doctors at California-Berkley have designed a device called, Cellscope which is a microscope that attaches to a camera-equipped cell phone and produces two kinds of imaging, called brightfield and fluorescence microscopy. The cellscope can take pictures and send them to medical laboratories all over the world. These advancements can help places around the world that lack the technological advancements that places like the
I believe that this new technology is an excellent advancement that the whole world can benefit from. There are so many people in third world countries that are dying of diseases that are undiagnosed. With the help of this new innovation, they are able to have access to doctors around the world. Developing countries are now able to get help in places that are unreachable by a doctor. This is advancement in technology can really allow the world to take a step in the right direction. At times, I feel that technology has made our world very lazy, but this is an excellent advancement that so many people can benefit from.
When I was a senior in high school I traveled to El Salvador with my Church and I came to realize how many people are sick and do not have a doctor at their fingertips to help them. In the

While I was reading this article, I immediately thought that this was a great idea and a great use of technology. I then thought to myself, how come no one thought of this prior to now. It seems like this could have been a very obvious and easily usable form for communication to help people overseas in third world countries. It just struck me as odd, but overall I think it is a good application of current technology.
ReplyDeleteThis innovation is truly a miraculous piece of technology. A device that can send pictures and give doctors better information in order to diagnose is surely to save lives. While this is a remarkable invention the cost is the only thing that worries me, because it is the costs that make the medical field difficult for some people to get the attention they need. If this device costs a lot of money there is no way it will help those who need it in the third world countries because there is no way they can afford it, if this device isn’t made available to those who need it and isn’t within a cost range in their budget this amazing medical tool will not fulfill its purpose.

ReplyDeleteThis new technology is extremely interesting and potentially beneficial to those suffering. However, just being diagnosed with the disease certainly does not help those who cannot afford treatment. I definitely agree with Charlie when it comes to the aspect of cost. As always with medical treatments, money is a huge issue for those in need. However, the technology behind this innovation is certainly impressive. Using such a common device as a cell phone to diagnose a disease could eventually save a countless amount of lives.
ReplyDeleteThe up and coming technology of today continues to dazzle me. With the Iphone continually enhancing it's features I question when there will be no more attributes to add. The idea mentioned in this article is another example of today's technology that I find remarkable. With the decreeing third world countries consistently struggling in the health field, this new advancement can only serve as a step forward to a reformed world. I too agree with you Charlie in the sense that nearly everything in today's society revolves around money, I too put into question the financial aspect of this technology. Better yet I am impressed with this new technique and I am pretty curious to see how it plays out in the near future.

ReplyDeleteThis new technology shows IT working in the right way. In third world countries, technologies like the Cellscope make the difference between a person living or dying, making many other IT uses almost superficial or unnecessary. It amazes me how a doctor working in the U.S. can diagnose a disease across the world using a device as common as the cell phone. In regards to Charlie's comment on cost, I realize that this project seems to have little benefit,as of now, in relation to what it will cost; however, since this technology can assist in saving lives, I would not mind if my tax dollars were going towards furthering research in this area of IT. This article shows IT addressing the world's big problems instead of materialistic aspirations.
